BROWNSBURG, Ind. – The seventh round of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires took place last Friday under the lights of Lucas Oil Raceway. The event took place as part of the Carb Night Classic “The Race Before the 500" down the road from the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Will Owen has fond memories of the event as he took second place last year in his rookie season of the Pro Mazda Championship.

This year’s race weekend got off to a tricky start with some wet weather influencing some of the track sessions. Qualifying was a struggle as the 21-year-old battled understeer that put him in sixth on the grid. The race itself was free of yellow flags and remained uneventful for most of the 90 laps around the physically demanding 0.686-mile oval. Owen crossed the line in in his Juncos Racing machine still in sixth position, earning him 15 more points toward the championship standings.

“It was a pretty good weekend," said Owen. "We didn’t accomplish everything we wanted to, but there were a lot of positives that we were able to take away. I’ve gone from third to fourth in the championship standings but the Juncos car was very good in the race this weekend, which is important moving forward. The race was pretty close and we were much closer to the Pelfrey cars than we were in races past. That indicates some progress that we are getting closer to where we need to be.”

The next race will take Owen and the rest of the Pro Mazda field even farther north to Elkhart Lake’s Road America road course on June 25-26.
